US, GCC agree to boost trade, investment ties

The United States Thursday said it has signed a framework agreement with Saudi Arabia and other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to explore ways to boost trade and investment with the region. Total two-way trade between the United States and the GCC totaled almost $100 billion last year, with the US running about a $24 billion trade deficit. “This important trade and investment agreement will help to grow and strengthen our economic ties with the Gulf Cooperation Council, which is a key strategic US partner in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region,” US Trade Representative Ron Kirk said in a statement.

Khorafi says 2009 assembly effective until Kuwaiti Amir’s decision

National assembly speaker Jassem Al-Khorafi has said the 2009 assembly which was revived as a result of the landmark court ruling in June remains effective until the Amir makes a decision. Speaking at a press conference yesterday after the constitutional court ruled in favour of the existing constituency law, Khorafi called upon the opposition to remain patient and rather work in the interest of the country and listen to the Amir’s advice. Meanwhile, the liberal National Democratic Alliance and the Kuwait Democratic Forum, in a joint statement demanded that the 2009 national assembly should be immediately dissolved and a fresh election called.

In the meeting, HH Sheikha Moza assured the group of her ongoing commitment to the issue of the protection and promotion of education during times of conflict or insecurity as an important priority in the target of achieving universal primary education, as of the 61mn children out of school globally, nearly half of them live in areas affected by conflict.
As an example of this commitment, Her Highness pointed to the recent release of a legal handbook published by her initiative Education Above All, which will raise awareness of the preventative and protective potential of international law and act as a deterrent for future violations.
