Kuwait government submits resignation

The Kuwaiti government submitted its resignation to the country’s ruler on Monday, a government source said, deepening a political crisis in the major oil exporter and US ally.

The government’s move came just days after a court ruling annulled a February parliamentary election and restored the previous assembly.

At least seven governments have stepped down in recent years amid a persistent political deadlock.

The new position of the Kuwaiti opposition, comprising of 35 MPs of the 2012 Assembly, came after a four-hour meeting at the diwaniya of former speaker Ahmad Al-Saadoun. The opposition also called on the government to reject any dealing with the previous Assembly which was dissolved by the Amir because several of its members are allegedly involved in corruption scandals. The new position by the Kuwaiti opposition is likely to escalate political tension in the country, which rose to new heights following the unprecedented court ruling.

Yemen oil route reopens after military pullout

Both sides agreed to pull out after negotiations, said an official from Yemen’s military committee – a body set up to separate belligerent factions of Yemen’s army and tribal fighters following months of unrest in the impoverished country.

The tribal groups backed an uprising which started last year and eventually ousted Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh. The Republican Guard is led by Saleh’s son.

Saudis give women Games go-ahead

Saudi Arabia will allow females to compete in the Olympic Games for the first time, its embassy in London said in a landmark statement issued on Sunday.

The Saudi Olympic Committee will “oversee participation of women athletes who can qualify”, the BBC quoted the statement as saying.

Equestrian contestant Dalma Malhas is likely to be the country’s only female athlete to qualify for this summer’s Games in London which get underway on July 27.
