The city wall was demolished in 1947 due to the huge growth of the city especially during the first Saudi oil boom in the 1950s, which allowed the city to expand and to develop outside the city wall. However, it seems that the decision makers, at that time, ignored or did not understand the importance of the authenticity of the area especially the old city wall and its gates.
