The most recognizable symbol of Hegra is Qasr al-Farid, a tomb carved into a dome that stands alone in the open. This ancient tomb was carved from a single rock. Hegra’s largest tomb, measuring about 72 feet tall, was left unfinished, with rough chisel marks skirting its lower third. Qasr al-Farid translates to the “Lonely Castle” in English because of its distance from the other tombs.
