Archaeological studies have shown that the area of Old Jeddah was settled by people in the Stone Age. Excavations show that Jeddah was founded as a fishing village in 522 BC. Rumor has it that Alexander the Great visited this thriving seaport sometime between 323 and 356 BC. For centuries, traders have converged on the city, which was once a key port in the frankincense trade.
