LEADERSHIP & GOVERNANCE
The Council’s seven-person Board of Directors is comprised of
President and principal founder, Dr. John Duke Anthony, a specialist on the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf states and a consultant to the Departments of Defense and State for more than 25 years;
Co-founder and Vice-President, Mr. Les Janka, a former Special Assistant to Presidents Nixon, Ford, and Reagan and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for President Carter;
Co-founder and Treasurer, Dr. Peter A. Gubser, President of American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA), the world’s largest private organization in service to Palestinians living in the Israel-Occupied Territories;
Co-founder and Secretary, Mr. Jean R. AbiNader, Managing Director of the Arab-American Institute, a sister organization formed from within the National Council, and a former President of the National U.S.-Arab Chamber of Commerce as well as the National Association of Arab Americans;
Member, Admiral Harold J. Bernsen (USN, Ret.), President of Physicians for Peace, former Commander, U.S. Middle East Force, and Deputy Director for Plans and Policy, U.S. Central Command;
Member, Ms. Sandra Charles, President and CEO of C and O Resources and former Director for Near East Affairs at the National Security Council in the previous Bush Administration;
Member, Mr. David Bosch, Director, Washington Office, Saudi Aramco Services Company, and former President, American Business Association, Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia.
The National Council’s Advisory Board was headed from its inception until his passing by the late Senator J. William Fulbright, former longtime Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and author of the legislation that bears his name as an international fellowship and has enabled hundreds of thousands of Americans, including the National Council’s President, to live and study in other countries. The board chairman since then until the present is The Hon. Lucius Durham Battle, one of America’s most accomplished diplomats, a prominent leader in U.S.-Arab relations, and one of only a few Americans to have served twice with distinction as Assistant Secretary of State.
