International Peace Award Given to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said

In October 1998, the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations was joined by American, Georgetown, and Harvard Universities, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the United States Air Force Academy, and twenty-nine other American national non-profit organizations in presenting its first of its kind award ever bestowed upon an Arab head of state — the International Peace Award — to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the Sultan of Oman. Former American President Jimmy Carter presented the award, which was accepted on behalf of His Majesty by longtime Omani Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs Yousef Abdallah Alawi.
