August Arabic Language Program in Oman – Application Deadline June 21

The National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations is pleased to present information about a special August Arabic Program at the Center for International Learning (CIL) in Muscat, Oman.

About the August Arabic Program:

CIL is offering a 3-week Arabic program from August 18 – September 5, 2013. Instruction is offered at Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced levels, and includes Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) grammar, media literacy, skills (reading, writing, listening), conversation (MSA and Omani dialect), and utilizes peer facilitators (Omani language partners). The program includes 6 hours of classes 5 days a week, with class sizes typically between 5 and 8 students.

August Arabic Program Cost:

Tuition only – $2,455

In-country package (includes: tuition, shared modern hotel suite or flat, half board (i.e., weekday continental breakfast and lunch), and weekday ground transportation) – $2,900

NCUSAR Malone Fellows Visit Oman, February 2013

The National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations’ Seventeenth Annual Oman Cultural Immersion Program took place February 15-27, 2013. The study visit provided a delegation of Malone Fellows with an unparalleled diverse exposure to Oman — one of the most historically and culturally rich of all Arab and Islamic societies.

The National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations’ 2006 Malone Oman delegation spent time aboard a traditional Arab sailing dhow, fashioned from wood and crafted by hand in the manner of Omani shipwrights and mariners of yesteryear.

In 2006, National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations’ Malone Fellow and Model Arab League advisor Professor Linda Pappas Funsch contributed a series of stories to the Frederick News-Post drawn from her experiences participating in the National Council Malone Fellowship Oman Cultural Immersion Program. Her seven-part series, “Oman Rediscovered,” explored various dynamics of the Sultanate’s culture, economy, international relations, and modernization since her first visit in 1974.

The National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations’ Seventeenth Annual Oman Cultural Immersion Program is close to completion, having provided a delegation of Malone Fellows with an unparalleled diverse exposure to Oman — one of the most historically and culturally rich of all Arab and Islamic societies. Sultan Qaboos Embarks on Annual Meet-the-People-Tour

Earlier this month, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said began his annual Meet-the-People-Tour. During this tour Sultan Qaboos visits Omani cities, towns, and villages to better understand people’s needs. The video above is from his visit to Seeh Al Shamikha, where Sultan Qaboos gave a speech about where Oman is heading before meeting one-on-one with members of the community.

The National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations is pleased to offer students a scholarship opportunity for intensive Arabic language study at the Center for International Learning (CIL) in Muscat, Oman.

Program Details:

CIL invites you to learn and grow through study in the Sultanate of Oman, an Italy-sized nation on the Arabian Sea. For years students have found this an ideal setting for their international study, a nation of warm and welcoming people who practice a form of Islam – Ibadhism – that practices tolerance and acceptance of others. CIL provides students with the learning experiences needed to become world citizens.

Comprised of Americans and Omanis with PhD and Masters Degrees, the CIL faculty facilitates experiential education, cultural exchange, and comparative studies to deepen understanding, promote common interests, and explore the shared aspirations of people from different cultures. CIL offers students the chance of a lifetime–the kind of understanding that yields lasting friendship, tolerance and mutual respect.

In the past half century, no Arab sub-regional inter-state organization has been as successful as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), established in May 1981. Next week, Bahrain will host the 33rd GCC Ministerial and Heads of State Summit in Manama (December 24-25, 2012). In an effort to explore how the GCC and its six member-countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE) achieved what they have accomplished, the Arabia, the Gulf, and the GCC Blog presents a 2006 article from Dr. John Duke Anthony, Founding President and CEO of the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations and the only American to have been invited to each of the GCC’s Ministerial and Heads of State Summits since the GCC’s inception, which examines some of the dynamics surrounding the GCC’s formation and strategic position.
