Nowhere in the Quran does it say that women should cover their faces. That custom began hundreds of years ago when Bedouins roamed the desert. Covering was a way of protecting ones skin and eyes. Now it is more cultural. It is not religious. I wanted to experience what it was like to wear a niqab, a garment, usually black, that covers the face. It was better than a COVID mask. I wanted to honor and respect my tour guide’s tradition. I wore it for a couple of hours.
